THE SUPRAMONTE<\/strong><\/h2>\n
The Supramonte<\/strong> is such an inhospitable<\/strong> area that man has never been able to bend it to his will. Living among these mountains is tough: there\u2019s a lack of water<\/strong>, and the rocky terrain makes it impossible to cultivate.<\/p>\n
Over the centuries, only a few brave shepherds<\/strong> dared to use its forests to raise small groups of pigs<\/strong> and goats<\/strong>\u2014the only herds that can survive in this environment. It was a hard life<\/strong>, made even tougher by the constant presence of bandits<\/strong> and the frequent thefts of livestock<\/strong>. Even in Roman times, the mountains of Sardinia were inhabited by indomitable people, so much so that they still carry the name Barbagia<\/strong> today.<\/p>\n
Only in the second half of the 19th century did the forests of the Supramonte<\/strong> see intensive exploitation for charcoal production<\/strong>. Charcoal burners created a dense network of mule tracks<\/strong> to reach otherwise inaccessible places and transport charcoal to the distant coves along the sea.<\/p>\n
However, the charcoal burners<\/strong>, shepherds<\/strong>, and bandits<\/strong> have long since finished their work in the Supramonte<\/strong>. Over the past fifty years, vegetation has slowly been reclaiming the mountains, enveloping the mule tracks and old shepherds’ shelters.<\/p>\n
