Just you, your guide and Tavolara <span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Tavolara island <\/strong>is an impressive mountain <span>that rises from the sea <strong>near Olbia <\/strong>and <strong>San Teodoro<\/strong>. From its summit, at 560 meters, it watches over the beautiful coast of northern Sardinia with such beaches as <strong>La Cinta<\/strong>, <strong>Cala Brandinchi<\/strong> and the whole <strong>Costa Smeralda<\/strong>, spotting even the silhouette of the highest peaks in Corsica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tavolara = \u221a(nature\u00b2 + adventure\u00b2)<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><strong>Our destination is Punta Cannone, the summit of the island<\/strong>, at 560 metres above sea level. Its vertical walls are adorned with luxurious Mediterranean vegetation and populated by <strong>wild goats<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>eagles<\/strong>\u00a0and the tiny\u00a0<strong>Etruscan shrew<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>From the beach, our journey starts with a very steep and panoramic path. This is probably the hardest part of the day but the view pays back. Closer to the top the path becomes easier and after approx 2 we will arrive at the base of the high and vertical walls on top of the island. Though, to reach <strong>Punta Cannone<\/strong>, the summit of Tavolara, we will have to commit to the exposed passages protected by the\u00a0<strong>Via Ferrata Normale di Tavolara<\/strong>. From here we will finally gain the immense panorama over the beautiful coastline. The view from the top can take your breath away, embracing the island of Tavolara, the shoreline of eastern Gallura and all the little islands scattered all around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>From the top we will have to walk down, reaching the beach at about 1:30 pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;A Brief History of Tavolara&#8221; open_toggle_text_color=&#8221;#E02B20&#8243; open_toggle_background_color=&#8221;#FFFFFF&#8221; closed_toggle_background_color=&#8221;#FFFFFF&#8221; icon_color=&#8221;#E02B20&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; title_text_color=&#8221;#E02B20&#8243; border_color_all=&#8221;#E02B20&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before <strong>Tavolara<\/strong> became the Bertoleoni family&#8217;s kingdom, it used to be a resting place for <strong>pirates<\/strong> and <strong>goats<\/strong> only. <strong>Giuseppe Bertoleoni<\/strong>, a Corsican fisherman, moved to this unpopulated island in 1807 and was appointed <strong>king of Tavolara in 1836<\/strong> thanks to his friendship with the king of Sardinia Carlo Alberto. Giuseppe became very famous worldwide as the king of the smallest kingdom ever. His son, Paolo I, forged a coat of arms and a flag and painted them in front of their &#8220;royal house&#8221;.\u00a0In 1896 Carlo I became the new king of <strong>Tavolara<\/strong>. The unfortunate sinking of 2 vessels forced him to sell two-thirds of the island to the state which, 30 years after, was purchased by the Marzano family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1930 the island gave work to a small group of families, who processed the limestone to produce lime and fished the waters around the island. Although the Bertoleoni family was invested with a royal title, they always remained poor people who had to fish and farm to feed their families.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1962 the Italian army created a subterranean military base in the northern half of the island. Since then most of Tavolara is an off-limit area and the waters are a protected area. Starting from sea level we will walk to the very top of the island at\u00a0<strong>567 metres above sea level.<\/strong>\u00a0It includes walking on a\u00a0<strong>very steep<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>uneven<\/strong>\u00a0path and\u00a0<strong>scrambling<\/strong>, where we will need the help of a fixed rope to progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The final part of the trek includes a short\u00a0<strong>Via Ferrata<\/strong>, equipped with an 80 meters long steel cable. We will wear helmets, harnesses and via Ferrata kit to overcome these exposed passages. It is not hard but participants should be confident walking on<strong> narrow ledges<\/strong> and <strong>scrambling<\/strong> on easy rock passages.
