Important Update: Tavolara Excursions Suspended for 2025 Season
Dear Nature and Adventure Lovers,
It is with regret that we must inform you of a significant change regarding excursions to Tavolara Island. Starting this summer season, and until September 30, 2025, trekking and climbing activities leading to the picturesque Punta Cannone peak will not be available.
The Reason Behind This Decision
A recent ordinance from the Municipality of Olbia, issued on May 13, 2025, and later rectified on May 19, 2025, has imposed this temporary halt for reasons of visitor safety and the protection of Tavolara’s invaluable natural heritage. The island, a true natural gem in northeastern Sardinia, has been part of the “Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo” Marine Protected Area since 1997 and is home to rare species and historical sites.
Local authorities have highlighted the need to prevent accidents, such as the one that occurred on May 3, 2025, on the “Ferrata degli angeli,” which required a complex rescue operation. The Mayor of Olbia, Settimo Nizzi, underscored how the increase in “Sunday hikers” during the summer could exacerbate rescue challenges. The stated goal is to balance conservation with human safety, also considering areas with high landslide risk identified on the island.

What This Means for Your Bookings
We know how much Tavolara is a coveted and appreciated destination. Unfortunately, due to this decision, it won’t be possible to book excursions to the island for the current season. We understand the inconvenience this news may cause and apologize for it.
We’re already working to offer you new and fascinating alternatives that will allow you to discover other wonders of our region and enjoy unforgettable experiences in Sardinia.
A Future to Be Defined
Tavolara’s situation is complex: the island is partly privately owned, hosts a military base, and is part of a marine protected area. This unique division means the island’s use is subject to specific concessions and restrictions.
The Municipality’s decision has sparked protests and reactions from hiking guides and tourism professionals, who have formed the “Tavolara Libera” (Free Tavolara) committee. This committee has filed an administrative appeal and a request for self-protection, asking for the ordinance to be withdrawn and for a technical working group to be established to define shared rules for safe and sustainable access. Criticisms concern the legal legitimacy of the ordinance and its perception as an excessively drastic response to a problem that, according to some, could be managed with more targeted regulation.
The amended ordinance, which limits the ban to the summer period (until September 30, 2025), also stipulates that a municipal regulation for governing activities on Tavolara’s trails will be drafted by autumn. The situation remains open, and by next autumn, it will be decided how the island can be accessed in the future.
