Via Ferrata Badde Pentumas

The Via Ferrata Badde Pentumas runs along the sheer vertical wall of the canyon of the same name, located in the Oliena area, in the heart of Sardinia. There are no paved roads leading to the start of the via ferrata; civilization ends well before reaching it, giving way to the pristine and majestic nature of Sardinia.

After about 30 minutes on a dirt road, the path to the via ferrata leads into the back of the Badde Pentumas canyon. The vast and atmospheric setting of the canyon seems to slow the flow of time, transporting everyone who walks through it back to the eras when immense glaciers and raging rivers carved these deep gorges.

A via ferrata in the heart of the Supramonte

The only sounds heard while climbing through the canyon are the calls of the birds of prey that inhabit the high walls and the whistling of the wind through the oak treetops. Words and explanations are unnecessary.

After about an hour’s hike through the canyon, you reach a vast clearing that houses the Via Ferrata di Badde Pentumas. Using the steel cable, participants can ascend the rocks and reach the top of the wall, where they can enjoy an unparalleled panoramic view. From above, the canyon appears even larger, and visitors can admire the immense power of the water that carved this gorge.

The upper section of the Via Ferrata di Badde Pentumas is the most distinctive, the most popular, and the most photographed. The final section of the via ferrata includes a short climbing section made easier by steel rungs and a cable divided approximately every meter. This is the most challenging section, but also the shortest (about 10 meters).

At the end of the Via Ferrata di Badde Pentumas, the return path leads through a young oak forest and past an impressive limestone slab, a striking example of the famous Sardinian “carved fields.” The hike back to the parking area takes about 80 minutes.
