Via Ferrata Punta Plumare

THE MOST THRILLING, PANORAMIC AND TIRING VIA FERRATA IN SARDINIA

Among all Via Ferrata in Sardinia, the one of Punta Plumare is most certainly the most thrilling and adventurous. The only way to reach it is by walking an arduous trail that crosses ancient huts, exposed passages and steep scree. The Via Ferrata di Plumare runs on a long horizontal ledge through the enormous crag of Punta Plumare, with unique views of the beach Cala Sisine and on the Gulf of Orosei.

Following an off-road transfer and a 30-minute walk, we will reach the beautiful famous beach Cala Sisine, from where the real adventure begins. From the south side of the beach, an ancient mule track rises to the side of the mountain reaching a hut built under a large rock cavity. From the hut, the itinerary becomes tougher, following the footsteps of the shepherds who once lived in these mountains. You might have heard of the infamous“iscalas ‘e fustes”, the precarious wooden ledges built by the shepherds to reach places only their goats could access.

Reaching the large wall of Punta Plumare, overlooking the blue sea below, we will face a narrow horizontal ledge. This is where the via ferrata starts, leading us on an adventure hanging over the forests and the sea.

After about 90 minutes we will reach the end of the wall, but the adventure is not finished yet. We have 2 consecutive abseils of 30 and 50 metres. At the bottom of the latest, we will be on the path of the trek Selvaggio Blu. From here a short via ferrata will help us climb up a ridge, and lead us to 2 more abseils (35 and 20 metres). Cala Sisine is in the view, and finally, we will take some time for a refreshing swim in the beautiful Sardinian sea.

Difficulty

The Via Ferrata di Plumare is the hardest in Sardinia. Participants should be fit and able to walk on rugged, steep and difficult terrain for several hours. Previous experience with Via Ferrata is essential.

Each guide can lead a maximum of 4 participants.

Reaching Cala Sisine

The Via Ferrata di Plumare is located by the remote beach Cala Sisine.

To reach the beach, a 17-kilometre-long dirt track starts from the plateau Golgo. If you have a 4WD car you can drive to the end of the road, or if you have a mountain bike you can reach the beach, at no additional cost.

If you don’t have any way to get there, booking a transfer with Land Rovers from the plateau is possible.  Alternatively, it is possible to take a boat from Cala Gonone or Santa Maria Navarrese. The cost of a 4WD or boat transfer is not included in our price.

Reaching the Ferrata with a 4WD

The via Ferrata is located on a crag in the middle of the Gulf of Orosei. It is possible to approach it by driving a 4WD vehicle on a 17 kilometres long dirt road. From the Plateau Golgo, above the town of Baunei, it takes 1 hour to drive and 30 minutes to walk to approach the starting point.

The price of a return 4WD transfer is €45 per person, which should be paid separately to an external company.

Reaching the Ferrata with a boat

An easy alternative is reaching the Via Ferrata by boat. During the summer we can take a boat from Cala Gonone. They leave Cala Gonone at 9:00, reaching the beach in about 45 minutes. The return is scheduled for 5 pm.

The price of a return boat transfer is €45 per person, which should be paid separately to an external company. This cost includes also the cost for the guide’s ticket

How difficult is the Via Ferrata Punta Plumare?

The Via Ferrata on the ledge of Punta Plumare is probably the most tiring in Sardinia.

The Via Ferrata per se is not too hard, but reaching the starting point, and returning to the beach adds a great deal of walking and abseiling.

From the beach, it takes 1 hour to walk on a steep uphill, including walking on scree, scrambling and easy climbing passages. At the end of the via ferrata there are 4 abseils, 2 more sections of via Ferrata and walking inside a wood.

What do I need for the Ferrata?

Nothing special, as we provide all the necessary equipment such as ropes, harnesses, via Ferrata kit and helmets.

You should wear mountain boots, or at least approach shoes, and comfortable clothes suited to the season.

Bring 2 litres of water per person and a packed lunch. Each participant should also have a backpack to carry the water and the equipment we will provide. One of the participants should also help the guide in carrying one of the ropes
